An athlete and her book that Melissa told me about, Lisbeth Darsh, has an amazing passage in one of her essays relating bike riding with life: "But one thing is fairly certain: where you look is where you'll go, on a bike or in this life. So pick your line well and stop riding your brakes. Fear is not your friend, but momentum is. The bumps will still be there, you just won't feel them as much. Concentrate on the delicious sensation of wind on your skin, and keep pedaling. Because, of course, movement is where we find ourselves again."
